Labour: The speech as heard in the living room...and judge it for yourself

Well it sure beats Brighton. Sitting back in a comfy chair, coffee at the side, fag in hand is the preferable way to prepare for THE SPEECH THAT WILL SET THE SET THE LABOUR PARTY ALIGHT. So far the BBC Parliamentary channel has so far NOT succeeded in showing a conference ready to fight for its principles and for power. Instead the overwhelming sense has been of apathy and disillusionment.

Most ministers move through the motions and urge delegates to put fire in their bellies, but themselves seem visionless and looking over their shoulders at the next available opportunity. Everyone seems to be humming along to the tune of “What a friend we have in Gordon”, but in a distracted, distant kind of way, as if they have forgotten the words to everything else.

The warm up show again is Sarah, introducing a video of Gordon’s greatest hits that the BBC won’t show. Sarah is here to testify……. “Intense, intelligent, gentle…I love him. That’s what makes him the man for Britain. Choosing the policies- Making the calls…. Facing up to huge challenges... Thank you for letting us into your lives and trusting Gordon in your lives”……

Is this intended as good PR? Maybe it works in the hall.

Well now for Gordon. The fifty draft speech…….

“Fighters and believers change the world. Biggest choice for a generation Fight to win for Britain

Look at what we have achieved crime waiting list times Sure Start- half a Million out of poverty –devolution- Northern Ireland- Minimum Wage

That’s what we stand for

Harriet Harman Equality Bill- No to BNP

Darling- a brilliant job

Peter and I get on fine

Learned to love him

Need to fight for the future

Choice between two directions for the country.

Britain needed action on the recession.

Choice is to intervene in markets- no one bank failed. - No saver lost

Chose to stimulate the economy- for the hard working majority

Chose to save jobs half a million- still more in work than 1997.

Mortgage assistance to 200,000.

Chose internationalisms over isolation.

Choice to act everywhere but in the conservative party.

WRONG ON MORTGAGES ETC ETC

TEST IS NOT ON PARTY MARKETING BUT ON JUDGEMENT

Given that record they should not be in government

Youth unemployment shows the choices that we face. Tories would lose another generation of young people.

We support manufacturing and business 200, 0000 small businesses helped

Transport and planning

Ideology of markets that the Tories believe in were corrupt. Bankers had lost sight of basic values. Values that the rest of Britain – the hard press hard working majority – share.

Britain that depends on fairness and responsibility.

Whatever these values are called, they are basic to the Labour party.

They are my values. Free education was the pathway for my family- couldn’t have afforded anything but the NHS. 60 year long liberation for

Government needs to act on the side of the people. Modest and middle income people cannot be swept aside

Markets need morals. Negligence on the part of bankers will be punished. The banks will pay back the British people.

Challenge of change needs a new model economy.

The contest will be for he first new Labour Government of the Global age.

New national investment fund.

For manufacturing

New role for the post office in personal banking

Green – quarter of a million new green jobs

Climate change deal required.

All the talents must be unlocked. Social mobility must be unlocked- schools investment cannot be cut. Standards will be forced up. 10,000 new internships in small businesses offered.

Also green work placements on the same scale.

To pay for this, choices in tax and public spending.

New fiscal responsibility act

All plans costed.

Tories will cut front line service –labour approach different.

NI up half a percent .in future

Taxes at the top increased

Public sector pay controlled.

All initiatives rejected by the Tories.

We must make progress and we will.

All young people in education or training till 18

Every patient the right to see

We will restore earnings link for state pensioners.

We will increase the minimum year wage every year for the next five years. Child benefit and child tax credit also.

Free child care from age 2.

Need to confront the children having children- 16 year olds will now be in supervised accommodation.

Need to be explicit about what’s right and what’s wrong. Where kids run riot where families are benefit dependent intervention is necessary- cracking down on those who go off the rails - those families will be tackled with sanctions

No more 24 hour drinking where local authorities ban it

Neighbourhood policing needs to be toughened. Will crack down on anti social behaviour.

Need a tougher approach on immigration-

Security will not depend on ID cards there will be no ID cards for British citizens.

NI will get the support to complete the peace process.

Our troops are owed a debt that we cannot repay- We will pay tribute

(The hall on its feet) forces will have the equipment they need

We will work with Obama for peace in Afghanistan and against terrorism

WORK FOR PEACE IN Israel and Palestine/

Iran must work within the international community

Will work to increase national aid- won’t break promises to the poorest countries

Can talk about the NHS in statistics but it’s about individuals. It is about saving lives. Labour should be proud of that. Cancer tests must be brought forward to within a week of seeing a GP. Early diagnosis and treatment combines with investment mean that.

Hospice care must be improved.

Social care must be provided in a new national care service

Starting now.

Families need support and the new service must be in the home as long as possible- free personal care- A change that will benefit the majority.

Value of allowances must not come before the value of their constituencies. We should be in it for what we can give.

Were corruption is proven there will be a right of recall.

Need a new system for choosing MPS and there will be a commitment to an AVS.

Hereditary peers will be abolished and replaced with an elected chamber

Nothing can happen if the Tories come to power they are the party without a heart.

Election is about your future and the future of your country/

Ask the Tories

Why the Tory priority tax is cuts for those a top?

Why would you scrap the right to see a cancer specialist budget?

Why would they cut the Home Office and thus the police budget?

Why are you at the fringes in Europe?

They disparaged the NHS, debt relief, International cooperation over recessions

Fairness and Justice can march on in big dreams. Our country can soar

Think Big and fight hard.

"Labour has given the country its future it’s about the change you choose. Never stop believing we can move forward the bigger the task the bigger the triumph. To stand to fight to win and to serve”
