From Ohio to Plymouth - reactionary employers must not win

In the US state of Ohio, 350,000 public sector workers are waging a political struggle to overturn legislation removing their collective bargaining rights. A union backed group "We Are Ohio" has mobilised 1.3 million signatures on petitions to force the anti union law, introduced by Republican State Governor John Kasich, to a referendum in November. National unions have pledged at least $25 million to the referendum campaign and 10,000 volunteers, mostly union members, are geared up to canvass voters:http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424053111904070604576516792725473986.html

Almost 4,000 miles away, in Plymouth, South West of England 2,000 UNISON members are being denied collective representation by a similarly reactionary public employer. The Tory led City Council this week derecognised UNISON in retaliation for the union resisting draconian cuts in pay and conditions.

As in Ohio, there can be no compromise with an employer seeking to break union organisation. As in Ohio, solidarity will be central to the local UNISON branch and region winning this crucial battle in defence of the right to organise:. As in Ohio the struggle will continue until the union rights of UNISON members are restored: http://www.unison.org.uk/asppresspack/pressrelease_view.asp?id=2409
